So if this is an MSI Wind base that’s been used to put this together, then allow me to stop and give LG a standing ovation for a spectacular looking keyboard. This may be the best keyboard yet that I’ve seen on a netbook. Seriously, look at that! They used every millimeter of space they could and put the largest, most thoughtfully designed keyboard they could. And that’s only where the good stuff starts.
Details are a little slim right now, but aside from the other standard array of netbook stuff (Atom processor, 1 gig of RAM, 8.9″ LCD, etc.), the LG X110 is also going to ship with the option of included 3G and GPS modules. Score!
I admit that the GPS might be a little overkill, but they’re so cheap to add these days that why not? I’m thinking it’s more likely that the 3G module is what is driving this price up to the estimated range of $738 (with a low-end of $590). That’s where this netbook, while otherwise good looking, is going to come up short.
At $738, you’ve stepped out of netbook pricing and jumped into notebook pricing. For another $200 you can get a MacBook with superior hardware all of the way around, minus the 3G and GPS modules. Of course, you’d also have a larger, heavier machine, but when you’re looking at the standard consumer, they aren’t going to be bothered by that.
The LG X110 almost has to be aimed at an enthusiast niche market by design. I don’t have a problem with that at all, but I wish them luck with sales. I think it’s a compelling machine, but time will tell if they priced themselves out of the market. Besides, maybe the price will come down by the time they hit the streets. My fingers are crossed.
Engadget has more on the LG X110.
P.S. Anyone know if you can just use your iPhone 3G data account with something like this without paying more? I’m guessing not.
