Now this is the sort of thing I live for: Commodore is joining the netbook game. Yeah, apparently Commodore, as in the old school Commodore 64 and 128D and all of those awesome, old machines. The hours I spent on a 128D playing Seven Cities of Gold and Gateway to Apshai and Defender of the Crown couldn’t possibly be counted on all of the fingers and toes of a major league baseball team, and here they are joining the netbook game.
The story here obviously isn’t how their machine is specced because you can fill in the blanks yourself. Pick an Atom processor, 80 gig hard drive, gig of ram, and the usual array of ports and things and you have your Commodore netbook. The problem? $600 expected price tag. That’s a bit high considering it doesn’t appear that they’ve added anything new or compelling. Except for the name. How cool would it be to show off your new Commodore?
Now, if you want to get technical, it’s obviously not the same Commodore company from the 80s. The rights to the name and everything else were bought out by a company based on the Netherlands a couple of years back and there’s been rumors and speculation that they’d be making some sort of full-fleged comeback for years. There have been some products on the market, but this, to my knowledge, if their first portable, netbook or otherwise.
Anyhow, check out the groovy oldschool look of the thing at GottaBeMobile. I’m not sure there’s a big story here, but I’d love to get a new Commodore (and not one of Commodore Gaming’s machines) just for kicks.
