Commodore netbook and more, part 2

Hot on the heels of the news of the Commodore netbook announcement comes more information, sort of, and a boatload of pictures of that and some other projects Commodore has been working on. Maybe it’s the old school geek in me, but I look at these things and I want one. In fact, I’d go so far as to say I’m almost willing to spend the money on one just so I can carry a Commodore around and see who the other hardcore geeks are who recognize and remember the brand.

So even though I do think they’ve hit on a nice design, I’m still not sold on everything else. The keyboard, in particular, is the same crummy thing (layout) that we’ve seen on so many other netbooks that it really isn’t worth blathering about any longer except to point it and wag a finger at them for such a horrible, obvious mistake.

Once you get past that, a few of the pictures do give a better idea of what features and hardware we can expect out of the Commodore netbook (and pocket PCs). Aside from the usual ports and things, of particular interest is the CPU choice in the netbooks and the amount of RAM in them. While the maximums are unknown at this point (they are still unknown, right?), the choice of a VIA C7 and 448 megs of RAM (448?) are known.

I would have never expected Commodore to go with a C7, but it makes sense if they’re looking toward the future and plan on putting a Nano in the machines when it comes time to actually ship them. At least, that’s my hope and speculation since the C7 really is underpowered and underwhelming.

Check out Engadget for more on the Commodore netbook.
