Everun Note Netbook Reviewed

I haven’t bothered talking about the Everun Note UMPC all that much because, for the most part, I was waiting to see how the hardware shook out. While everyone else out there is falling over each other to build another Atom-based netbook (except for the Commodore netbook, thank you), Raon Digital opted to go with an AMD Turion X2 processor for their netbook. Because of increased power requirements from the AMD processor, this could have gone a couple of different ways. It looks like it’s gone the good way.

So let’s quickly look at what’s under the hood of this 7″ netbook. (An aside, there seem to be some confusion in the world regarding it being a netbook or a UMPC. While the lines are certainly blurred, because it has a 7″ screen I’m opting to call it a netbook. That’s where Asus started with the Eee PC, so that’s good enough for me.) It’s packing the aforementioned AMD Turion X2 (that’s a dual core CPU — dual core Atoms are coming soon, at least), 1 GB of ram, 30 or 60 GB hard drive (or SSD), and a Radeon RS690E GPU. That right there, CPU aside, is what separates this netbook from 98% of the rest (the Asus N10 netbook is excepted here).

Because it’s packing such different hardware than most every other netbook, it runs a little differently. The AMD Turion X2 is hungrier than the Atom, and one would imagine that the Radeon is also a little hungrier than the GMA950, so that means that when you’re running the Everun Note netbook on battery power, you’re not getting the full power of the system. But plug it in and you suddenly have a dual-core powerhouse (relatively speaking) in a 7″ package. It’s enough that it can easily handle 720p video, and with power, can even handle some 1080p video. That’s something you won’t see an Atom doing with a GMA950.

Battery life seems to be on par with about everything else, so it’s fine. UMPC Portal has the comprehensive review of the Everun Note netbook and also mentions they’ll be doing more testing/hardware changing in the future.
