Samsung Netbook — Specs, Sort Of

This isn’t the first time news of the Samsung netbook has come out, but it’s slightly more information than was originally revealed, so what the hell? Let’s take a closer look at what they’re offering as they jump wholeheartedly into the market that has already been dominated by the likes of Asus, Acer, and HP, but never mind that. Welcome to the party, Samsung, so nice of you to show up…late.

Since they’re coming into the game late, you’d expect the Samsung netbook (by the way, I keep referring to it as the Samsung netbook because it has no name) to be sporting all sorts of groovy new innovations and features, perhaps some sort of radical touchpad addition that’s sorely needed on these things. Maybe they’ve figured out how to get a ton of battery life out of them by doing some sort of hardware switch that underclocks the system (oops, that’s been done already), or maybe they put a touchscreen into it to make it a netbook tablet computer, or maybe they opted to choose the same run of the mill parts that everyone else has. Care to guess which?

If you guessed the latter, congratulations for paying attention to recent trends in the netbook market. Opting for the 10.2″ route, Samsung is giving it the standard hard drive, 1 gb of ram, Atom CPU, Windows XP, and apparently a 6 cell battery. Though not as common, it’s starting to become common for manufacturers to include 6 cell batteries in their netbook, and that’s something I approve of even at the cost of a little extra weight and bulk.

The most interesting thing of this rather mundane netbook is that Samsung has opted to go the route of including a “normal” keyboard and has done what looks to be a commendable job of cramming a good-sized keyboard in there complete with a standard layout. It does my heart good to see more manufacturers doing this instead of putting stupid keyboards on their netbooks (Asus, I’m looking at you, and Dell, and so on and so forth).

Anyhow, for more, check out What Laptop for a few pics and such.
