iPhone 2.1 Firmware; Toshiba Netbook; BenQ Netbook

So today’s the big day when iPhone 2.1 firmware is released and a little scanning of forums sounds like it’s mostly positive. There’s some speculation that Apple changed the algorithm to display “more bars” even when the signal is weak, but this is rampant speculation and rumor for now. So while there’s no solid data on reception and call quality, the rest of the update seems to have been good. Me? I’m waiting another few days before I update mine. (Oh yeah, got a 3G last week.)The rest of the big issues relate to user interface quirks (i.e. it’s noticeably slower than my first gen. iPhone ever was), backup issues, and app support. It sounds like they’ve addressed some of the UI lag, but I’m not sure it’s to the level it was with the original phone (which is fantastic).

I’ve also seen reports that the backup time has been decreased, but it’s not exactly night and day. First off, why does it automatically backup? Have they added an option to disable that? So I’ll lose my texts — I’ll resync everything else. Sheesh.

Also, it sounds like apps are playing a little nicer and aren’t quite so crashy. That’d be nice.

Now, netbook news, because you knew it was inevitable.

Toshiba has announced they’re entering the market with the Toshiba NB105 netbook. It’s exactly what you think it is if you consider what everyone else has come up with. Moving on.

BenQ has announced they’re entering the market with the BenQ Jobook Lite U101 netbook. It, also, is exactly what you think it is (name aside) if you think of every other netbook out there, only it may have a 3G option.

Yeah, that’s it. Crappy news, I know, but the netbook market is becoming a joke to see who can pump out the most bland, boring, predictable design the fastest. Seriously guys, step it up and make something cool, not a lame netbook that’s just like everyone else’s except for the name on it.

Weak.

Come on, what are you expecting from netbook. It’s the price that matters. If you want something cool, go get a sony or whatever and stop complaining.

If price is the only thing that matters, then why is it MSI, Samsung and LG are able to make compelling netbooks? And if Commodore ever releases theirs? Sign me up.

I respectfully disagree: it’s not all about price.
