HP Mini 1000 Netbook

So it was just last week that Dell decided to let the world know that they’re going to be releasing what looks to be a compelling netbook, the Dell Mini 12 Netbook / Dell Inspiron 1210 Netbook, and this week we have HP re-entering the market with their HP Mini 1000 netbook. What separates this from the original HP Mini netbook? Well, let’s take a look. The biggest change, obviously, has to be the processor. This, also, is perhaps the most disappointing to me. The previous HP netbook offering sported a VIA CPU under the hood, and while it was horribly underpowered compared to the Atom that is now in the HP Mini 1000 netbook and damn near every other netbook on the market, the upcoming VIA Nano looks to spank the Atom around a bit. Then again, I haven’t seen any benchmarks comparign the Nano to the dual-core Atom, so the distance may have been closed.

Anyhow, aside form the CPU change, this new netbook is another in the 10″ category, and if pictures and reviews are to be believed, it looks to have one of the best keyboards on a netbook yet. Interestingly enough, at 92% it’s the same size as the keyboard on the Dell Mini 12 netbook — hey Dell, what the hell?

It’s not all good, however, because HP has done their best to make sure their netbook is still not the first choice on anyone’s list by only offering a 3 cell battery. I imagine there’ll be a 6 cell option in the future, but if you try to configure one today, 3 cell is the only option you’ll see.

So, if you’re in the market for a 10″ netbook and don’t mind limited battery life (honestly, for many, its probably not an issue — my Acer Aspire One netbook with its limited battery life has been fine for me), you can get a pretty sweet deal on one and get what looks to be a damn fine keyboard.

Dell, take notes from MSI and HP on keyboards, ok?

LaptopMag has a great review of the HP Mini 1000 netbook that I wholly suggest you check out if you’re considering purchasing one of these netbooks.
