Moving sucks? I’ve said that already, right? Well, still trying to get situated. Anyhow.
AMD has introduced a couple more new processors that may start showing up in netbooks/nettops soon. While the Semprons aren’t generally in the same league as the Athlons, it’s still worth taking a quick peek at these to see what they offer.
The AMD Sempron 200U and AMD Sempron 210U are meant for embedded devices, thus my speculation that they could show up in a netbook or nettop. While they don’t have the same power as the AMD Athlon 2650e, they’re not bad little chips, not by a long shot.
First, the AMD Sempron 200U is rated at 1 ghz and has a TDP of 8 watts. Compared to the AMD Athlon 2650e at 15 watts and 1.6 ghz, that’s not a bad drop at all. Sure, the Sempron has always been to the Athlon what the Celeron is to the Pentium (or Core X), but AMD has come up with a chip that may finally be capable of running a netbook or nettop, aside from the AMD Athlon 2000+ that everyone has seemingly forgotten about.
Anyhow, the AMD Sempron 210U is a slightly peppier version of the AMD Sempron 200 and is clocked at 1.5 ghz and has a TDP of 15 watts.
I’ll be curious to see what AMD does with these because the short history of netbooks has allowed them to make some really curious statements. One day they have no interest in the market, and the next they do.
Of course, just because AMD might have interest in the netbook market (they still do this week, right?) doesn’t mean that the manufacturers are clamoring to put AMD products into their netbooks. Intel still owns that market, obviously.
Anyhow, DigiTimes has more on the AMD Sempron 200U and AMD Sempron 210U.
