Acer Aspire Revo Nettop Coming Soon – Ion-based HTPC?

It’s not secret I’m a fan of low-power, high-utility computers, and while we’re waiting for the Asus EeeBox PC B208 to come out and fill the gaping void of a low-powered, low-cost computer that can serve as an HTPC, it looks like Acer is getting ready to hit the market with their own. While the specs don’t look to be fully decided yet, one thing is very clear: this is going to use the nVidia Ion solution that Intel should have adopted (or at least made their own sucky graphics card on par with) some time ago.

Coming in at a price of around $400, or about the average price of a netbook these days (I realize that’s debatable when you have some ulra-low priced netbooks around, especially Dell’s Mini 9 netbooks being practically free when they’re doing weird coupons and giveaways), but $400 isn’t very much if it’s capable of being the brain in your HT setup.

Where the Asus EeeBox PC B208 is going for an ATI solution with its graphics, the Acer Aspire Revo nettop is opting to take nVidia’s Ion platform and running with it.

While some of the specifics are still a little unclear, it will feature an HDMI connection, allow for up to 4 gigs of RAM, and take very little juice because the Intel Atom is so damn frugal when it comes to power consumption.

It’s too early to say if the Acer Aspire Revo will be better or faster than the Asus EeeBox PC B208, but it’s nice to see that two of the biggest manufacturers are looking in the green, low-power/low-cost market with computers that should be plenty powerful for the masses while still providing a great niche use for others.

Digital Trends has more on the Acer Aspire Revo nettop.
