Quick and dirty, this is not going to cover everything, but if you have an hour to kill, you will get OS X working on your Samsung N120 netbook, but don’t expect every last thing to work. Ready to get started? Grab your Samsung N120 netbook, iDeneb 1.4, and get these video kexts and let’s go to work.
This is still a work in progress, but it should be slightly more helpful to those who wanted something a little more detailed than my super fast initial post.
Preparing to install OS X on the Samsung N120 netbook
If you don’t have iDeneb 1.4 yet, get it.
Before you get going, you need to go into your BIOS (F2) and go to the Advanced tab and look for EDB (Execute Disable Bit). Enable it. If, after you have OS X iDeneb 1.4 installed on your Samsung N120 netbook you find you get stuck at a blue screen, this is why. Be sure you enable this.
Also in BIOS, go to the Boot tab and change Brightness Mode Control to User Control. Now, manually set your screen brightness using the FN key and the arrows. Set it to whatever you feel comfortable with (half is usually fine) because this is how you have to set brightness in OS X until a proper DSDT.aml is created.
Also, in case you missed it at the top of the screen, you need some video kexts. Have these handy. Everything else will more or less work with what comes pre-packaged with iDeneb 1.4.
Partition however you like, but I whacked XP entirely because I hated it so much (Samsung really made it awful). For sake of disclosure, I used a single journaled partition. You can use the disk utility to set this up, or else you can use the Windows disk manager to make partitions and then modify them in the OS X disk utility. If you’d like a little more, check the OS X installation guide for the Asus Eee PC 1000HE where I cover it a little more than I can right now.
Installing OS X on the Samsung N120 netbook
OS X will slowly, very slowly, boot. You do not need to specify any boot flags, just hit Enter to boot.
Choose your language and click the blue right arrow button (or hit Enter). Now wait several seconds.
If you’ve opted to use multiple partitions, then use the Disk Utility (found under the Utilities menu at the top) to erase and format your OS X partition as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Proceed forward when you’re satisfied with your partition settings.
Here’s where you’ll need to select a few things to help make stuff work. Be sure you choose the Customize option when you’re at the screen that’s ready to install OS X.
iDeneb Essential System (it should already be checked)
Under Patches 10.5.6 Ready and then Audio, choose AppleAzaliaAudio.
Under Patches 10.5.6 Ready and thenChipset, choose ICHx Fixed.
Under Patches 10.5.6 Ready and then Fix, select: FireWire Remove, Battery Manager.
Under Patches 10.5.6 Ready and then System Utilities: GenericCPPMCControl.
Under Patches 10.5.6 Ready and then Video and then Intel choose Intel GMA950.
Under Applications, be sure you install Kext Helper and OSx86Tools. Pacifist may also be a good idea, but I haven’t needed it thus far. (Or just install everything.)
Once you’ve selected all of these things, hit Done and then Install and wait. Once it’s all done, with some luck, it’ll reboot itself and you’ll be at the usual OS X user registration screen.
Post install of OS X on the Samsung N120 netbook
Now open up that video kexts file I said you’d need for post installation.
Now open your Applications folder (OS X’s application folder, to be more precise: Shift-Alt-A will open it if Finder has your focus). In the iDeneb App folder, open Kext Helper b7.
Now open the folder with those video kexts and drag all of the .kext files to the open Kext Helper b7 window. Type in your password at the bottom, click the Easy install button, hit OK, and wait. You’ll have to reboot when done, but when OS X comes back up, you should find your video resolution is now fixed.
Power management will be installed but not functional, so…
Copy the GenericCPUPowerManagement application to your Applications directory and then open up System Preferences, then Accounts, and then select your account on the left and click the Login Items tab. Click the + sign, choose your Applications folder, and select GenericCPUPowerManagement. You may also want to click the Hide button.
Reboot to verify everything is loading properly and you should have a new icon in your dock and a lot more battery time.
Upgrade to 10.5.7
I’m going to shamelessly steal from the forums for the 10.5.7 update. Aside from formatting, this is entirely pwm8’s work. See the iDeneb 10.5.7 update guide thread for more information. However, just a side note, the Samsung N120 netbook can be upgraded using the official Apple delta upgrade. I can’t say for certain that it won’t break anything, but it does, in fact, work. If you’re worried, stick to the community upgrade.
Ok, I have spent most of the morning struggling with the 10.5.7 iDeneb update, but I finally have it mostly working. I was running iDeneb 1.3 updated with the iDeneb 10.5.6 updater.I spent most of the morning in safe mode trying to figure out how to get back to working condition. Needless to say, this update was a bit of a struggle, so here’s some tips to help others.
Main points:
1. Backup to a flash drive or SD card ALL of your AppleIntelGMA950 files. This includes AppleIntelGMA950.kext, the two bundle files containing “950″ in the file name, the plugin file with “950″ in its file name, and the AppleIntegratedFrameBuffer.kext from your 10.5.6 install before you do anything. All of these files are located in your System/Library/Extensions file. The AppleIntel950 files are next to each other in that file so are easy to find.
2. Also backup IOBluetoothFamily.kext from the same file [may not be necessary for Samsung N120 netbook]
3. Download the iDeneb 10.5.7 Combo update from Ihackintosh or from the link posted in the first page of the large thread on this forum titled: “OS X on Asus eeePC 1000HE – Updated 5/18/09”
4. Install the combo updater, reboot.
5. Reboot should work, but your machine will be in 800×600 stretched mode (much like the first time you installed). Also, bluetooth will be working, but will not be able to be turned off.
6. Using Kext Helper, reinstall AppleIntelGMA950.kext, AppleIntegratedFrameBuffer.kext and IOBluetoothFamily.kext. Don’t reboot yet.
7. From your backups, copy the 2 bundle files and the 1 plugin file that have “950″ in the file name into your hard drive System/Library/Extensions folder. You will have to tell it to replace existing versions of all those files.
8. Reboot. You should be back to normal, with correct resolution and bluetooth able to be turned on and off.
A couple of issues: I don’t see anything different regarding power with this update-a couple of posters have noticed better battery life, I haven’t seen that yet. Also, no difference in the power management stuff in GenericCPUPMControl-one side’s graphs jump up and down and the other side stays at 100% (this is showing VoodooPower.kext 1.2.3 for reference)
I haven’t noticed that anything else is broken. Yet.
—–
At this point, you should have most things working in OS X on your Samsung N120 netbook, but wireless and ethernet will not. Also, it may sleep when you close the lid, so find a clamshell.kext and that should resolve it. There’s a patch for ethernet I’ve not tried yet that I think will work, and wireless can be coerced into working infrequently, but it’s very ugly and unreliable and you’re better off replacing the wireless card if you want a seamless experience. Installing a Broadcom BCM4321 based card is highly suggested, and can be done in 10-15 minutes, even by novices.
Samsung N120 netbook internals
If you’ve looked at the breakdown involved for swapping cards in the Asus Eee PC 1000HE, this is nothing like that. There’s about 13 screws on the bottom, the case pops off, and the wireless card is in the bottom left. See the picture for more details (it’s from my iPhone, so yes, the quality is awful and I apologize).
Also, I am yet to try it, but there’s a new audio driver that’s being used in the 1000HE community, and considering most of the netbooks out use the exact same hardware, it doesn’t seem too far-fetched that it may work on the Samsung as well. When I find some time this week (I hope) I’ll give it a shot and see if it works: else, if anyone tries it, a quick comment or forum post would be appreciated since it’ll help anyone else out who happens to be looking for info on getting the N120 to play nicely with OS X.
Lastly, again, this guide is still a work in progress, so please bear with me while I figure out the best way to present everything to and to get functional links setup. This is something of a busy time for me, so I may not have an opportunity to anything more than very small updates between now and some time next week.

I followed your instructions and I am running OSX on my Samsung N120. Thanks for the info! However it doesn’t recognize the onboard keyboard or trackpad. Hooking up an USB keyboard and mouse works. I didn’t need the USB kbd/mouse for installation but when I first booted into OSX it couldn’t find the onboard devices. Did you run into this problem? Did I forget an extension?
You, I, and another reader have all had different experiences to some degree which is a little worrying because we’re all, presumably, using the same hardware and software. That said, the keyboard and trackpad worked fine for both of us, so I’m not sure what to suggest.
You’re using iDeneb 1.4 and not some other version or “distro”? My only suggestion would be to try the PS2 keyboard and PS2 trackpad drivers — they’re available as a fix (or in another category, I forget where specifically) when you’re customizing your install, or else I’m sure you could find kexts without too much trouble if you looked around. I recall a recent thread (I think the vanilla install thread) on the forums here mentioning them as well (though in regards to the 1000HE).
[...] Samsung pre-installed rubbish and formatting the hd to dual boot OSX. I found a very helpful guide here which guided me through the whole process in around an hour. The iDeneb 1.4 package is the one to [...]
I don’t have any real specific updates. The guy (Mysticus C) who was getting a lot of things to work on the NC10 had his website yanked out from under him and hasn’t put everything up on the new host yet, thus making it exceptionally difficult to find drivers. That said, I have a couple of suggestions to get things to work, though I’m not positive they’re true solutions:
1) Ethernet: you’ll have to find Mysticus’s drivers, I think. If you search for “ethernet nc10 os x” on google, one of the listings will be a customized Mysticus OS X install (a torrent for it, I should say). That may be a good start in general to all of the questions. However…
2) The HDAudio driver that we’ve been using on the 1000HE may work on the N120, but no guarantee. I’ve not had as much time lately as I’d like (been moving and trying to get settled…) to mess with things, but the hardware on these netbooks is so frequently similar that I wouldn’t be surprised if it works.
3) Brightness: to my knowledge, the only “working” method right now is as I detailed it in the guide: controlling it through BIOS, which means no dynamic brightness control. However, referring back to number 1, Mysticus includes some wizardry in his NC10 pack that adds a somewhat cumbersome, but functional, method of getting brightness controls working. Outside of an N120 specific DSDT.aml, I’m not holding my breath for getting this to work.
Obviously my specific uses for the N120 differ from what yours will be, but none of these three issues affect me. Since replacing the wireless card, I’m satisfied with connectivity. I use my iPhone for music/podcasts and I’m happy (and comfortable) with leaving the brightness at a constant 1/2.
Not to say that it’d be the same for you, but I’ve learned to live with these (current) limitations. The Samsung OS X community isn’t as thriving as the Asus one, but progress has (and slowly is) being made. Once Mysticus returns, I think we’ll see a significant jump forward in possibilities.
I would also still recommend the N120 to anyone looking for a netbook (OS X or otherwise) if the keyboard is one of their more important criteria. It is, simply, an outstanding keyboard.
Having spent the day trying to get 10.5.7 installed on my samsung n120 with the video working correctly I’m close to cracking up. can anyone help me install the update and then correct my resolution without a grey screen displaying after attemping to install the intelgma950 kexts. Any help would be greatly appreciated
Got the resolution working perfect all updated, thanks for this guide I have linked to it many times already. If you want to see where to get the drivers package for 10.5.7 graphics then check out my blog. http://www.barryreidbooks.com. One question tho can i update java using Apple software updater
I´ve looked at each guide and I keep getting a blinking cursor when I try to install OS X. I´ve already tried partitioning the hard drive as active and without a letter assigned to it, but no dice. Is there anything that needs to be done before hand to format my XP hard drive that I´m missing?

Thanks to this guide I’m posting this message from my Samsung N120 with OS X. The only issue I found (after replacing the wireless card) is the built in audio input is not being recognized (System Preferences -> Audio -> Input) and neither the headphone or microphone connectors work. Any suggestions?
Audio works fine for me with the voodoo driver, but it’s finicky about which apps are being used. Mplayer Extended is the video player of choice; for my FLAC files I like XBMC. Has anyone figured out a way to get scroll working on the touchpad? This is the only real hurdle left for me. Although, there is the occasional grey screen of death
Thanks for the update on the 10.5.8 release. I was cautiously waiting for some feedback on it before I proceeded. Do we know what .kext files need to be pulled from 10.5.7 to restore usability to the keyboard, trackpad and mouse?
Also, does anyone have a good fix for the brightness controls? I thought mine was working with the manual controls, but it only works in auto mode. Dim when on the battery and bright when on the power supply.
I was able to install iDeneb with this method but initially couldn’t get my keyboard or trackpad to be recognized or any sound. I tried it again and I think leaving the DVD drive connected through the reboot helped because that’s the only thing I did differently but it works now.
Any luck with 10.5.8? Touch-pad and keyboard do not work but you can still use USB mouse and keyboard but, no longer a netbook
Also, any luck with Artheros 5007EG?
azsooner, the bluetooth driver does not set the bluetooth to off on 10.5.6. Do you have it working on 10.5.7 only? Was anyone able to turn bluetooth off on 10.5.6 or 10.5.8?
Bluetooth fix appears to only work under 10.5.7. The easiest wireless fix is to replace your card with a Broadcom version. I got mine on eBay about $20.00.
Hi, having problems getting iDeneb 1.4. If 1.4 is still available on the website then it is difficult for me to find because the website is not in English.
Is 1.4 still the best version for N120? It has been updated but reports suggest that the new version has added problems. Any chance of putting a link to a version suitable for N120?
I don’t know others experience, but I have recently tried iAtkos v7 on my N120 and it works pretty well. I did replace my wireless card with an Airport Extreme card (Broadcom). I had to modify kexts for the screen resolution, ethernet, webcam, and for Time Machine to work over a network. I’m still having a little difficulty getting a dual-formatted USB drive (windows and Mac partitions for backup purposes) to mount, but if there’s interest, I’ll post a guide when I’ve got things worked out.
Having left the above message I managed to locate iDeneb 1.4. Generally works well. Ethernet works with the script azsooner highlighted; bluetooth also switches on and of. wifi will hopefully work when I install Broadcom card. But the main problem I am encountering is in waking it up. Mostly the display remains without any video but even if it wakes up it looses network connection (ethernet and bluetooth). I think the wifi (when it gets working) will have the same problem.
It will be great to hear how Badgerhead got on with iAtkos v7 to run on N120. Do you have the problem with wake-up?
Hi, I’m pretty new to the osx software. I have a samsung N130 and I have been trying to put leopard 10.5.6 on to it.
It installs from the cd ok but when I comes to restarting the computer just after it has installed, the computer won’t restart so you have to manually just turn it off and when you restart the computer it just starts up and then shuts down again. (as though it’s not seeing the hard drive)

007raj, I do have a problem with waking from sleep and haven’t been able to correct it. Basically when it goes to sleep (from the apple menu or inactivity) it never wakes up. I have to hold the power button down and restart. Lid closure doesn’t do anything at this point (doesn’t cause the computer to sleep). I think I need to find a working Clamshell kext for lid closure to work, but haven’t yet. For now, I set sleep for 1 hour because if I leave it unattended for that long, I must not really need it.
Plus, since I just threw in an Intel X25-M SSD, boot time is pretty fast now so I just shut down when I’m done.
Tried this new install version and it worked great. I now have Snow Leopard 10.6.2 installed on my netbook. Much cleaner and easier than before. Installing from a USB drive is definitely the way to go.
Does sleep work in any way for you with Snow Leopard? Really it is the only thing that doesn’t for me (although I haven’t tried to systematically try everything). I’d certainly try it if it was fairly easy. I tried the vanilla method on insanelymac, but could not get it to install. I have a working dual-boot XP/Leopard (iAtkos) system so I’m not wanting to rock the boat (or waste an afternoon) unless it is pretty easy.
Glad to hear you were successful though. Maybe I’ll join you in the near future.
I had sleep working great in Snow Leopard, but I decided to mess with the netbook and had to re-install. The only thing I did different this time, was to install Snow Leopard directly instead of using iDeneb 1.4 first and then upgrading it. I’ll have to go back as see if the sleepenable.kext file is the trick to this mystery.
I found this blog a few months back that may offer some insight into tweaking the little things that drive us crazy. Check it out, if anything it is an entertaining read.

Sounds good. I’ll keep checking back to see how it goes.

I found this blog a few months back that may offer some insight into tweaking the little things that drive us crazy. Check it out, if anything it is an entertaining read.

My MacBook Mini

Hi Guys,
I know this may seem redundant but I just bought a Samsung N120 and was wondering if there’s a guide to explain how to install Snow Leopard onto it.
I’m in the process of acquiring a Broadcom BCM4321 card for the Wifi to work.
Thanks in advance.
