Update: 10.5.7 appears to be installed and working on my Samsung N120 netbook. At the lowest brightness setting (since brightness control is flaky in the Samsung N120 netbook) OS X is predicting over 7 hours of battery life (6 hours for the LCD at full brightness). This is up from ~5 in 10.5.6. Apple has definitely tweaked OS X for the Atom, or something close enough that it still affected it.
As you may or may not know, Apple released the 10.5.7 update to OS X just a couple of days ago, and reports are trickling in to various sites (including our forums here) and they seem to suggest that the 10.5.7 update adds support for Intel Atom CPUs. Furthermore, it would seem that officially (?) recognizing the CPU, Apple has worked out superior power management that is resulting in a significant boost to battery life.
The early reports are suggesting that the 10.5.7 update is going to be a significant one in the netbook community, and I’m in the middle of attempting to update it on my Samsung N120 netbook, but it looks like I have some work ahead of me as I need to install a few things first (and even then I’m not sure how it’ll work on an iDeneb installation as there’s conflicting reports of success).
Regardless, I suggest watching the thread here (linked above) as one of the posters, rcfa, has not only managed a near vanilla install, but has had excellent success with 10.5.7. I’ll update this post if/when I’m able to get 10.5.7 to run and give some comparisons of results.
Hey there, I have been really enjoying this site, and thanks to the initial post about putting iDeneb on the N120, I got OSX 10.5.6 running on mine. Wireless wasn’t working, and I couldn’t get the ethernet working even with the Apple A1277 USB adapter, which worked on the tower Hackintosh I built a while back. However, I planned to buy the Broadcom card to remedy the connectivity problem. The biggest problem I was having was that I couldn’t get sound from the headphone jack, only from the speakers. So if you know of a workaround for that, I would love to hear it. And also, the fan seemed to run constantly, which never happened with XP installed. Again, perhaps fixable with a kext.
Today I updated to 10.5.7 using the one-click package that can be found here:
http://www.ihackintosh.com/2009/05/update-hackintosh-osx86-from-1056-to-1057/
To my surprise, it worked fine, but the desktop came up at a lower resolution. I tried reinstalling the three video kexts linked in the initial post, and that fried the video. So I’m starting over. Anyway, just thought I would mention the results of my experiments for the benefit of anyone else following these threads, and to open it up to helpful comments. The one-click package comes with some additional kexts which I perhaps should have experimented with before trying the older ones
One other thing worth noting is that the iDeneb 10.5.6 distro comes with a kext package for the NC10. Do NOT check this when installing on a N120, rather, follow the instructions in the earlier post on this site (http://smallcomputing.net/2009/05/06/guide-install-os-x-on-samsung-n120-netbook/). However, I’m crossing my fingers that if iDeneb releases a 10.5.7 distro, it will include a similar package for the N120, which is a groovy little machine.
