Even though the iPad isn’t out yet, that hasn’t stopped some folks from cooking up the latest batch of software to modify their iPods and iPhones in ways that Apple doesn’t want them to. With his latest version of the software, George Hotz, better known as geohot, the guy who has provided blacksn0w/blackra1n/etc., has managed to make an untethered (i.e. no cable to the computer) jailbreak that he thinks is going to work for the iPad.
If you haven’t seen it anywhere else yet, then you should certainly be aware now that Apple is indeed shipping iPads. If you pre-ordered on day, chances are you have an email indicating that your iPad order has been processed, the iPad thrown into a box, and it’s headed your way.
The title and the picture say it all. If you’re in the US (or know someone in the US who can in turn ship to you) you can now pre-order your iPad, starting at $499. The question on everyone’s mind (well, those who want an iPad) is what day will you receive your wifi iPad if you order now? The answer: April 3rd. Yes, that’s right: it’ll be delivered the day it is officially released according to Apple’s store.
That must be a pretty penny to get Saturday delivery. Here’s to hoping it shows up Friday, instead!
The iPad with 3G will ship some time later in April, and here’s to hoping we get a review up on April 3rd, because yes, the order has been placed.
Remember a few months back when the video first leaked out and everyone was a tizzy about the Microsoft Courier tablet/e-reader/digital journal thing? Well, it was a pretty cool little mock-up video, and it’d seem a little more has leaked out today that helps shine a little light on what exactly Redmond is up to. Well, partly so.
So the original word from Apple was that the iPad, their long-rumored and finally revealed tablet (sort of), was going to be available in larch March. Announced in January, Steve Jobs said it’d be available in about 60 days. Well, they may have missed that mark by a couple of days, and certainly there’ll be a few people who jump all over that, but really, does anyone care? At this point, I can’t be the only one who wants to get his hands on one of these to see what they can really do. And now it looks like they’ll be available for pre-order in a week.
This is something that, as a writer, has been on my mind for quite some time now. While Amazon’s Kindle is definitely a quality device, and as a book reader, very good, it does little more than actually present the equivalent of the print copy of a book. Yes, I’m well aware that you can buy books/magazines/blog content on the device, and I’m also well aware that it has a web browser on it, but let’s be honest: as cool as the Kindle is, it doesn’t have the horsepower or the display to do real multimedia content. The iPad, however, does. And Penguin, one of the big publishers, is looking to take advantage of that.
It doesn’t seem like it’s been all that long since nVidia announced their Ion platform and started bringing the product to the market (and everyone let out a collective sigh because it meant there was finally a decent integrated mobile video chipset), but it’s been long enough that nVidia Ion 2 is getting set to come out soon.
